"The town is populous, tho' not large, the streets broad, but the buildings old, and low; however, there is good company and a good deal of it; and a man that coveted a retreat in this world might as agreeably spend his time, and as well in Dorchester, as in any town I know in England". Daniel Defoe, in his A tour thro' the Whole Island of Great Britain (1724-1726).

Dating back to settlements as early 4000 BC based around the Iron Age hill fort at Maiden Castle, Dorchester has a long and fascinating history. The Romans occupied in 70 AD and walled the town – a section of which still exists today, along with remains of a Roman town house alongside the County Hall. Perhaps most famously, Dorchester was the inspiration for local author Thomas Hardy, who based The Mayor of Casterbridge on the town.

Two doors away from the building that Hardy imagined as the Mayor’s house sits our beautifully restored Dorchester Steamer Trading. Opened in 2012 (the last day of Olympic sailing at Weymouth competed for attention with our first day of being open!), our lovely store has one of the most wonderful selections of kitchen goodies to be found anywhere. We’ve got great selections of coffee machines (try your hand at making an espresso or cappuccino – they’re all ready for testing), cookware (and our demonstration table), knives (with lots of advice and practice on how to keep them sharp), together with kitchen electricals, tools, baking, tableware, glassware. We’re pretty confident that whatever you’re looking for, if it has a place in the kitchen, Steamer Trading will stock it.

Come in and see us in Dorchester – you’ll find a warm, friendly welcome, great service and advice – and not to mention a fantastic town to explore.
