I enjoy learning about all the new cooking technologies and gadgets that are coming onto the market. And to get hands on with them all is even better!
As any regular customer of Steamer Trading will quickly realise, our Guildford store is no ordinary cookshop!
After opening our first shop on Guildford’s historic High Street in 2004, we soon realised that Steamer Trading was a bit of a hit with keen cooks locally. So much so, that we started to try and fit more and more into our (then) compact store until we were bursting at the seams.
By a stroke of luck, we managed in early 2009 to acquire a former bank building further down the hill, that offered much more space. Constructed of concrete, it wasn’t much of a beauty and added little to the diverse architecture of one of England’s best High Streets. Feeling brave, we enagaged the services of a stirling-prize nominated architect and sat down with local planners and conservationists to design something a little bit special for this very prominent site.
Opened just in time for Christmas that year (thanks to some very busy builders), our new store is one that we’re incredibly proud of. Steamer Trading won the Global Innovator Award for ‘the World’s best cookshop’ in Chicago the following year, and the building was a finalist for the prestigious Guildford Design Awards in 2011 and Retail Interiors Awards in 2010. Most importantly of all, our customers tell us they love the new store too!
Situated over three floors with a polished concrete staircase running between them (there’s a lift as well), our Guildford store carries Steamer Trading’s widest range of kitchenware. From exotic Japanese knives to the best cookware, an extensive range of glass and tableware to design ranges including Iittala, Alessi, Joseph Joseph and Guzzini, we’re sure you’ll find everything your heart (and kitchen) desires.
On our second floor, you’ll find the award-winning Caracoli café (voted best small food shop in the 2012 Daily Telegraph Awards) offering the best coffee, cakes and goodies in Guildford – combined with terrific views and an outdoor roof terrace.
How to find us
Steamer Trading is at the top of the cobbled part of Guildford High Street (pedestrianised during the day). You can spot the store walking up the street from the river – which is why we have such nice views looking back down! Approached also from the junction with North Street, keep an eye open for the statue of George Abbot, former Archbishop of Canterbury. You’ll find that, seen form the right angle, Steamer Trading’s shopfront provides the perfect backdrop for this imposing statue.
Guildford has plenty of nearby parking – the Bright Hill, York Road, North Street, Castle and High Street car parks are all close. Guildford is well served by trains and other public transport.
Having a newly-built building allowed us to make our Guildford store fully accessible. There are easy-going staircases and a lift serving all floors, including the café. Please note that although there is a lift to the lower ground floor, the means of escape is via a staircase which might be unsuitable for some wheelchair users. Our staff are very happy to assist in any way possible with access difficulties.
