Steamer Trading means an Aladdin's cave of goods, especially within the compact and bijou Saffron Walden store. We often describe it as a toyshop for grown-ups and our customers would certainly seem to agree.
Situated in the beautiful countryside of the northern part of Essex, Saffron Walden to this day retains many of the mediaeval buildings that mark out its long history as a thriving market town.
The town’s name comes from the Saffron Crocus that was grown widely here in the 16th and 17th centuries (formerly known as Chipping Walden, the town was renamed in recognition of its main source of trade). As demand for saffron dimished, the town became a centre for brewing, with no less than 30 breweries or maltings established here by the 1830s.
When Paul Marchant, who’d run a very popular kitchen store here alongside his shop in Bury St. Edmunds offered us the chance to open in the town, we were delighted. Marchant’s Cookware Emporium’s team have stayed with Steamer Trading since we opened – and we know that our loyal customers value their expert knowledge and wonderful, friendly service.
Although our Saffron Walden shop may be small, we do manage to pack a lot of cookware in – and we’ll source anything that we don’t have in stock.
How to find us
Steamer Trading is at 1B Market Street, Saffron Walden CB10 1HX – just off the Market Place. Parking can be found on Common Hill and there is limited parking in the Market Place. Audley End train station is 3 miles from the town or there are local bus services.
Our store is all on one level, although because of its small size it can be a little cramped at times (but always friendly!) Please let us know if you have any special requirements and our team will be more than happy to help.
